Tack's Humidor, New World Cigars
I don't know if the term or phrase "New World Cigars" is fitting and, perhaps can even be seen as condescending in some ways.
Silvio Perdomo, Arturo Fuente, J.C. Newman, Abdel "AJ" Fernandez and Melanio Oliva are all decedents of Cuba having established their brands on the Island Nation as early as 1865. So calling these brands "New World" that are being manufactured in different countries that have been producing cigars in some cases much longer than many Cuban brands, doesn't really fit the reality of the cigars history. With that, and perhaps in defense of the New World term, one can't call a cigar manufactured in Nicaragua a "Nicaraguan". This is due to the fact that cigars manufactured outside of Cuba, source tobaccos from many different countries. You may find a cigar produced by AJ Fernandez having tobacco from The Dominican Republic, Mexico, Nicaragua itself, Africa, and even the United States. So I've settled on the term "Regional" i.e., reginal cigars. Some prefer the simplicity of calling them "Non-Cuban", but to me that implies a superior existence to a subjective product. So, I'll just call them "Regional Cigars". Okay, and with that 9 yards of hot air out of the way.
What's my opinion on all things reginal cigars?
Some are excellent, many are okay, but most are horrible. The majority of RC's are a collective of cigars where many use the same blends. The reason for this is due to the fact there are hoards of blend masters or at least those that claim they are, whipping up blends to satisfy an incredible demand that rests on hundreds of brands and literally thousands of series.
Below is a look at all the brands, but only about 60% of the available series. Reginal cigar brands are constantly adding new series as well as dropping series that are not performing on the market. 75 to 125 new series are introduced each year and 10 to 15 new brands.
My issue with Reginal cigars.
With the exception to long standing brands such as Arturo Fuente and Newman, the majority of brands have only been in the game for about 25 to 40 years and a bit longer for some others that left Cuba during or right after Castro's revolution. I'm not saying that 25 years is a short time, but it's certainly not several hundred years old as you find in Cuba. While there has been cigars manufactured in reginal countries for the same amount of years, non have maintained a brand. Further, brand names a series have been placed on RC's that reflect a contemporary advertising scheme and the cool dude look that is seen in social media platforms. To me, naming a cigar "Fat Bottom Betty" is not in the line of tradition, quality and craftsmanship and to me, projects an image showing a herd of fat frustrated middle class leather clad weekend Harley goons with skull tattoo's pulling on an OpusX they couldn't tell from a 5 dollar stick.
What do I like?
Not in any particular order, A.J. Fernandez, Arturo Fuente, Davidoff, and EGM are hands down the very best of the best in the RC world. Of course that's my opinion and how I taste it. The others shown are also in my opinion, exceptional cigars that have a home in my humidor. I think it's also important to note, there are at least a dozen other brands that I consider very good but as I mentioned above, they share similarities that make it difficult to distinguish from one brand to the other. Again, this to me is a huge problem in the RC world. There's just too many cigars saturating the market that share the same profiles under a different label.
